Welcome

Welcome to Camp Moonhwa

What is Camp Moonhwa?

Camp Moonhwa is a Korean culture camp held yearly in Rochester, Minnesota. This year camp will be held once again in Rochester with some activities elsewhere in Rochester and the surrounding area.

Campers range from Kindergarteners through 9th grade. Campers usually have Korean ancestry or are relatives to someone with Korean ancestry.

What is a Korean “culture camp”?

A culture camp is a chance for children to celebrate and share Korean heritage and culture, meet old and new friends, and have lots of fun. Most of the attendees are Korean adoptees or their siblings but anyone interested in Korea is welcome. Camp is held daily from 9:00 AM to 3:15 PM.

When is Camp Moonhwa?

Camp Moonhwa will be June 24-28, 2024.
The overnight event (for 6th-9th grade campers) will be June 18-19, 2024.

What can you and your camper expect?

At Camp Moonhwa, your camper can expect classes that teach Korean skills or culture. Every day, campers receive lunch, almost always Korean foods. Most classes are taught by people with Korean ancestry, if not people born in Korea.

Typical class schedules included the following:

  • Korean dance
  • Korean drum
  • Tae Kwon Do
  • various art classes
  • Korean culture
  • Korean language
  • Korean Music
Other classes that have been included in schedules include the following:
  • Korean cooking
  • Meditation
  • Korean storytelling
  • K-pop
  • Career panel, where Koreans in various occupations discuss their careers
For the 6th-9th graders, there is an overnight event campers can attend. It costs extra. There are team-building activities in the afternoon. In the evening, there is food, fun activities, and some sessions to help guide campers learn skills to be Korean in America. In the morning, there are more team-building activities.

For the parents, there are often evening sessions. These sessions range from parenting seminars to cooking classes.

The camp is meant to be fun and educational. Plus, the campers get to see and connect with others who are Korean.

Who Runs Camp Moonhwa?

Camp Moonhwa is organized, planned, and run by volunteers--typically campers' parents. Teachers receive some payments. In fact, this Q&A is being written by a volunteer.
